What Air Filtration & Purification Involves
Filters are rated by MERV, and while a higher MERV rating captures finer particles, it also restricts airflow more than a lower rated filter, which can strain a blower motor that was not designed for that resistance. We check the system's static pressure and blower specifications before recommending a filter upgrade, since the goal is better air quality without shortening the life of the equipment.
Beyond standard filtration, options like UV air treatment target biological contaminants, mold spores and certain bacteria that pass through a standard filter, by exposing air to UV light as it moves through the ductwork. Electronic air cleaners use an electrical charge to capture fine particles that standard filters miss, and can be a good fit for homes dealing with persistent fine dust or smoke particles.
We install any filtration or purification equipment in a location that maximizes contact with the airflow, typically near the air handler or in the main return duct, and we verify the system still operates within a safe static pressure range afterward. We also explain the maintenance schedule for whatever is installed, since filtration equipment that is not maintained loses effectiveness over time.
